User Rating: / 1
Wednesday, 26 December 2007

InNovaSound System combines a compact, USB-compatible scanning probe with the super compact FlipStart® PC to provide a truly portable ultrasound device for the healthcare industry.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 27, 2007 -- Direct Medical Systems LLC has announced that it has teamed with FlipStart Labs to deliver the world's smallest ultrasound system. The InNovaSound System combines a compact, USB-compatible scanning probe with the super compact FlipStart® PC to provide a truly portable ultrasound device that is uniquely suited for health care services such as emergency first responders and general practice physicians. The U.S. market for diagnostic imaging systems is thought to be equal to the total market for the rest of the world - approximately $16 billion in 2005.

The InNovaSound System represents major progress and potential to improve the quality of physician examinations, which has been virtually unchanged for 200 years. The InNovaSound System can provide truly portable ultrasound to the patients' bedside. InNovaSound can also be used to obtain more information before ordering other diagnostic tests, thus reducing the number of unnecessary tests that results in decreased anxiety and better outcomes for patients, as well as increased workflow efficiency and system utilization in imaging departments.

"We are very pleased to have the FlipStart PC as part of the InNovaSound System. The FlipStart PC is an extremely high quality and durable device, better than any mini PC available today." said Mark Falkowski, president and chief executive officer of Direct Medical Systems. "FlipStart's portability and connectivity are especially suited for medical professionals who need high quality, low cost diagnostic imaging products that travel with them."

Apple may use Intel Menlow platform in upcoming UMPC
User Rating: / 1
Wednesday, 26 December 2007
Although UMPC devices haven't taken off as fast as Intel would like them to, Intel may have a new fan of its upcoming UMPC platforms in Apple. Ars previously speculated that Apple was considering using Intel's Menlow and Moorestown platforms (particularly Moorestown) in future ultra-portable devices. An AppleInsider report has shed some further light on the subject; the site says that the Menlow platform will be coming to Apple products in 2008. Yes, it's a bit of an obvious rumor if you follow Intel, but it's worth taking a look at anyway.((source:arstechnica.com) read more

Affordable UMPC range is planned

Rosemary Haworth

Medion has joined Sony, Samsung, Asus, HTC and OQO by announcing the UK launch of a UMPC (ultramobile PC). Demonstrating the company's UMPC RIM 1000, Medion representative Rick Munday confirmed the specifications of what the firm hopes will be seen as "one of the first UMPCs that's going to be affordable". It will be marketed at "commuters and workers who want entertainment on the move", he said.

Although the UMPC RIM 1000 will cost £799 - remarkably similarly priced to Samsung's £800 updated version of its Q1 device as well as those announced by Asus and HTC - Munday hinted that pricing for the Medion device was subject to review and that a price cut later in the year was likely.

Medion's UMPC will sport 768MB of DDR2 RAM, a 30GB hard drive and a 6.5in touchscreen display. This slides up to reveal a full qwerty keyboard with which the user can navigate their Windows Vista Home Premium desktop, access the web via 802.11g Wi-Fi and conduct video chats using the VGA webcam built into the device's upper surface. Two USB 2.0 ports and Bluetooth are included, as is a stylus for those who prefer to input data this way. (source:pcadvisor.co.uk)read more

Flipstart compact PC goes on sale

Wednesday, 04 April 2007

Seattle (WA) – More than two years after the launch of what was perceived as its main competitor, Flipstart today launched its first ultra-compact PC. Compared to the OQO model 02, the Flipstart is slightly larger, comes with a complete feature set and offers some innovative approaches for data input, but has less horsepower and a high price.

Ultra compact PCs such as the OQO are intriguing computing devices that spark emotions but so far have failed to attract the interest of the mass market. The recently released OQO model 02 is going a more stylish route than its predecessor and is available for less money in base versions. The Flipstart PC, in some way, appears to be OQO model 01 all over again: A package of nice features that costs more than two decent notebook PCs (or two UMPCs.)(source:tgdaily.com)read more

FlipStart concept beats its reality

Tuesday, 20 March 2007
At $1,999, the FlipStart PC costs $12 an ounce less than the $95 you might expect to pay for Beluga caviar. But it could be more than just the FlipStart's price that is hard to swallow.
The just-larger-than-palm-sized Windows PC, created by a company owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is either the first in the wave of truly transportable devices, or it's a flip-up BlackBerry with a thyroid problem.
I'm not sure which will hold true.
In concept, the FlipStart, with a 1.1 GHz Intel processor, a 30-gigabyte hard disk drive and 512 megabytes of RAM, is a great idea. You get a lot of performance in a tiny package, one which can slip in your briefcase or purse.  (source:washingtontimes.com) read more

Review: Some will flip over the FlipStart PC; others will think it's a flop

Two tests can be applied to new mobile technology, and the FlipStart easily passes the first: Is the device cool?

The FlipStart is sized somewhere between a smart phone and an ultraportable laptop, weighs a bit more than 1.5 lb. with battery, and comes with your choice of Windows XP or Vista (our test device used Windows XP). It sports 512KB of RAM and a 1.1-Ghz Pentium M processor.

In other words, Vulcan Portals, the company started by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has stuffed a lot of power into this little clamshell device. So much power in such a tiny package is intrinsically cool, and some innovative and highly useful features make it even cooler. (source:computerworld.com) read more

T-Mobile announces Ameo UMPC-like PDA
User Rating: / 1
Friday, 26 January 2007

T-Mobile has confirmed it will ship HTC's Athena UMPC-like PDA phone in the UK and Germany as the Ameo. Meanwhile, HTC is working on a version with a 7in display, it has been claimed.

Ameo/Athena has a 5in touch-sensitive display, T-Mobile said. The device also has an 8GB hard drive, HSDPA 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a three megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, and and 624MHz XScale processor. Unlike true UMPCs, Ameo runs Windows Mobile rather than Windows XP.

Both T-Mobile Germany and T-Mobile UK announced yesterday they would offer the device, but only the German wing was willing to put a price on it: €500 when you take out a two-year airtime contract. The Ameo will ship in Germany in March, T-Mobile said, almost certainly following a launch at the CeBIT show in Hannover.(source:reghardware.co.uk) read more
